The stable isotope ratios of environmental water spatially vary in a predictable manner across landscapes. Thus, hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope analysis can be useful to answer questions of geographic provenance both for water and for plants and animals that incorporate water into tissues.
There are many applications of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope analysis for investigating origin. At IsoForensics, we use stable isotope ratio analysis, proprietary isotope databases, and tested models to determine probable geographic region(s) of origin for both natural and manufactured products, including substances such as illicit drugs, explosives ingredients, building materials, counterfeit currency, ink, and textile and plant fibers. We can create maps using geographic information systems (GIS) to describe the predicted regions of origin of a sample.
