The chemical characterization of material can be crucial for relating two substances or for linking a material with a suspected source. Stable isotope analysis provides an additional signature, the stable isotope fingerprint, to the chemical characterization of a sample. Materials that are often identified as chemically indistinguishable by other analytical techniques can be distinguished by stable isotope compositions.
We can measure the stable isotope ratios of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and strontium in materials to help you answer questions of relationship and source. Materials accepted for analysis include—but are not limited to—human hair, teeth, and bones; water and soils; food and drugs; counterfeit currency; explosives; plant materials; animal tissues; and trace gasses. Along with isotopic characterization, the separation and identification of different compounds contained within a material can be useful for relating two substances or for linking a material with a suspected source. Materials that appear to be identical when inspected as a conglomerate can often by distinguished after compound separation and identification. At IsoForensics, we use compound separation, identification, and measurement techniques to isolate compounds—including contaminants—from water, air and soil and then match those compounds to potential sources. The stable isotope ratios of environmental water spatially vary in a predictable manner across landscapes. Thus, hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope analysis can be useful to answer questions of geographic provenance both for water and for plants and animals that incorporate water into tissues. There are many applications of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope analysis for investigating origin. At IsoForensics, we use stable isotope ratio analysis, proprietary isotope databases, and tested models to determine probable geographic region(s) of origin for both natural and manufactured products, including substances such as illicit drugs, explosives ingredients, building materials, counterfeit currency, ink, and textile and plant fibers. We can create maps using geographic information systems (GIS) to describe the predicted regions of origin of a sample.

In addition to region of origin determination, stable isotope analysis can be useful for reconstructing the geographic movements of and diet changes by organisms. This application is particularly suited for mobile organisms (like animals) materials that are continually produced through time at a predictable rate (like hair).
We can use the stable isotope ratios of biological tissues to determine geographic movements and diet changes of a human or other animal through time. Examples include hair/fur, nails, bone, and tooth enamel.
The measurement of 14C content can be used as a quantitative technique to determine the age of modern biological materials. This is due to the rapid increase of atmospheric 14C associated with extensive aboveground nuclear testing in advance of the 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Example applications of 14C measurement include human age determinations through analyses of teeth, age determination of human skeletal remains, opium and wine year of production, and the year that an individual died based on hair analyses.

Stable isotopes can be used to verify manufacturing claims and to investigate the authenticity of materials. For example, stable isotope analysis can detect some types of economic adulteration. We can also use stable isotope analysis to distinguish products from a particular region or made using a specific method. Analysis provides a stable isotope fingerprint that is useful for characterizing the material and linking it to other materials or potential sources. Example materials include foods, drugs, explosives, textiles, wood products, and a variety of other trade goods.
